Day 13 of 30
Using the Psalms as Prayer
“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.”
Foundational teaching
The Psalms are a rich resource for prayer. They express the full range of human emotion — joy, gratitude, and peace, but also sorrow, frustration, and fear. Using the Psalms as a prayer guide helps us put honest words to what we feel and learn to rely on God in every circumstance.
What this means for you
You do not have to tidy yourself up before you pray. The Psalms show that God welcomes raw honesty. When you cannot find your own words, borrow theirs — and notice how often lament turns toward trust.
Reflection questions
- How do the Psalms help you express your emotions and needs to God?
- What have you been reluctant to say to God honestly?
- Which psalm speaks for you right now?
My first step
Read Psalm 42 aloud as your own prayer, pausing wherever a line matches your situation.
Guided prayer
God, my soul is thirsty for You. Thank You that I can come to You honestly, with everything I feel. Meet me here and satisfy me with Yourself. Amen.
