Live with Purpose

Day 18 of 30

The Fruit of the Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)

Foundational teaching

Paul speaks of the fruit of the Spirit as one fruit with many qualities. The Holy Spirit grows it in us as we walk with Him. These qualities are not things we produce by trying harder. They are what the Spirit produces in a life being changed by Christ, and together they show others that our faith is real.

What this means for you

Fruit grows; it is not installed. If patience or self-control feels far off, the question is less 'how do I try harder?' and more 'am I staying close to the Spirit's work in me?' Growth is usually slow, real, and noticed by others before it is noticed by you.

Reflection questions

  1. Which quality of the fruit of the Spirit do you find most difficult, and why?
  2. Which comes most naturally to you, and why do you think that is?
  3. Where have you seen genuine growth over the past year?

My first step

Choose the one quality you find hardest and ask the Holy Spirit for it by name each time you remember today.

Guided prayer

Holy Spirit, produce Your fruit in me. I cannot produce love, patience, or self-control by trying harder on my own. Keep me close to You and grow what only You can grow. Amen.
